Google Pushes First Penguin Algorithm Update 1.1

No matter that it?s late Friday night on the start of a three-day holiday weekend in the U.S., Google has just pushed out the first update to its recent webspam-fighting Penguin algorithm. Let?s call it Penguin 1.1.

Google?s Matt Cutts announced the news a short time ago on Twitter, calling it a ?data refresh? that impacts less than one-tenth of a percent of English-language searches.

Although webmasters and SEOs have been speculating consistently in recent weeks that Google had already pushed out a Penguin update (or several), Cutts specifically says this is the first update since Penguin launched back on April 24th.

Google has described Penguin as an algorithm change that?s aimed at webspam and, more specifically, ?sites that we believe are violating Google?s quality guidelines.?

Penguin led to immediate outcries from across the SEO industry, with many questioning if it made search results better or worse. Because it?s an algorithmic change, Google said it wouldn?t consider reconsideration requests made via Webmaster Central, but it did setup a form for webmasters to use if they believe Penguin had hit their sites by mistake.

Even though tonight?s update affects a small percentage of English searches, that form is still online.

For more about the Penguin update, see the articles listed below.

Bowers & Wilkins P3

Bowers & Wilkins, the hi-fi and pro-audio manufacturer responsible for multi-thousand dollar monitoring systems in recording studios across the world, is now several products into its far more affordable?but still quite expensive?consumer audio line. The P3 is its latest offering, a pair of headphones designed for mobile use. At $199.99 (direct), it fits somewhere in between the C5 In-Ear Headphones ($179.95, 4.5 stars) and the P5 Mobile Hi-Fi Headphones ($299.95, 4.5 stars)?the former of which is an in-canal earphone pair. The P3, which comes with built-in iPhone controls, provides a pleasantly resonant low frequency response that is more subtle than the C5. It also has less emphasis on high frequencies than either of the previous B&W models, resulting in a slightly less crisp response. Regardless, it sounds excellent and is a standout in this price range.

Design
Taking design cues from its older (and more expensive) sibling, the P3 has rounded rectangular ear-cups similar to those on the P5. The primary difference here is the use of cloth instead of leather for the earpads and the headband cushion. The top of the band and outside of the cups are a black, rubberized material?but the headphones are also available in white. B&W P3 inline white

Bowers & Wilkins describes the cloth used as "bespoke acoustic fabric" ideal for acoustic transparency, while underneath there is a layer of heat-sensitive memory foam that slowly molds itself to the shape of your ear for better sealing and comfort. Indeed, the P3 can be worn for hours without much fatigue, despite snug pressure on the ear (which actually helps block a small amount of ambient noise from the outside world). As for the sealing, this may improve the listener experience, but the P3, due to its supra-aural (on-ear) design, leaks quite a bit of sound. If you monitor at moderate-to-high volumes, anyone near you can likely hear a bit?or a lot?of whatever you're listening to.

iPhone controls and a microphone are built into the cable, which has a narrow 3.5mm jack that easily fits most iPhone cases. The mic works just fine, and the remote's buttons allow for playback and volume control. There are no accessories for the headphones however, except for a black, hard shell protective case that the P3 folds down flat into.

Performance
The best way to describe the P3's response in comparison to previous B&W offerings: subtle. There is ample bass response, but it's more refined than intense. The extremes?deep lows and higher frequencies?are dialed back a bit in comparison to both the C5 and P5. The end result is a sound signature that feels weighted towards the middle frequencies?something kind of rare in the era of booming bass and tweaked treble to match it. This focus on mids sounds best on classical and instrumental tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances" or Bernard Herrmann's Psycho film score, allowing middle-register strings to take centerstage without ignoring lower frequency percussive hits.

Deep bass tracks like The Knife's "Silent Shout" sound powerful withut feeling overly boosted, and there's never any distortion, even at maximum volume?but hopefully, you're not listening that loud, regardless. Bill Callahan's unique baritone vocals on his latest record, Apocalypse, lack the bite that a more tweaked treble would provide, instead sounding a bit more smoothed around the edges, more deep than crisp. It's a great sound, but some listeners may feel that there's a bit of definition missing on certain genres.

It comes down to personal preference?no one is going to listen to the P3 and think these headphones sound bad, but particularly fans of rock or vocal-heavy music may want a bit more treble presence. Even though the deep bass is not a booming presence, either, the low-mids are an area of emphasis that makes low register strings, basses, and deeper vocals seem particularly resonant, even at modest volumes.

If crisp, brighter audio is your preference, it might be worth considering a pair of in-canal earphones from Etymotic instead?the Etymotic ER-4PT ($299, 4.5 stars) is an industry standard for flat response, but its lack of booming bass naturally lends itself to a crisper overall sound. If you're determined to stick with headphones, but still want a bit more high frequency presence and less low-end, the more affordable Shure SRH550DJ ($125, 3.5 stars) is a solid option. Of course, for the low frequency fiends out there, the P3's smooth low-end may not be enough, but the Denon AH-D1100 ($199.99, 4.5 stars) will deliver in this regard, without going into gratuitous bass territory. If you have a bit more money to spend, both the aforementioned P5, and the even pricier Shure SRH1440 ($399.99, 4 stars) are highly recommended?the Shure model, in particular, finds a beautiful balance between lows and highs, and is ideal for professional or critical listening. Bowers & Wilkins, however, continues to deliver in the headphone and earphone market?the P3 is the least sculpted sound signature of its three models, and is fairly priced when you consider performance, power, and features.

Pamela Redmond Satran: Weirdest Baby Names On The New National Roster

With over 33,000 baby names on the new national roster -- a full 50 percent more than were in common use a quarter century ago -- you figure there have to be some weird choices among them. Nameberry's friend Brooke Dowd Sacco at KidCrave gathered the 102 weirdest names on the 2011 baby name list, and we cherry-picked the strangest of the strange.

Here, the weirdest baby names of 2011:

  • Corleone

This gives a whole new meaning to Family Names. Corleone, the name of six babies last year, joins future troublemakers named Capone, Gotti, Bates, and Juvenal. Potential sister names include Sicily and Sicilia.

  • Cougar

We've been predicting the rise of fierce names, and this year's roster includes a pack of them: six boys named Cougar along with 86 named Fox, 85 called Bear, 29 Hawks, 14 named Wolf, seven Broncos, and five girls named Tiger. To the six girls named Bunny out there: Watch out.

  • Draper

The other Don, as in "Mad Men's" Draper, inspired six namesakes this year. Draper is also one of the new occupational names, ala Mason which shot to the national Number 2. Among the other strange occupational names on the list: Strummer, Governor, and Pilot.

  • Eh

Canada's favorite interjection -- or perhaps the international expression of apathy -- was given to 14 girls last year. Were their parents excited? Eh....

  • Graceland

Elvis is back in the building, returning after a one year hiatus to the Top 1000, and now the name of his home, Graceland, is in the baby name lexicon too, given to seven girls. Grace and Gracelyn are popular for girls, along with Grayson and Greyson for boys, and Presley and Memphis for both sexes.

  • Kingsolomon

The name of the Biblical royal, spelled as one word, was given to five boys last year. Brother conjoined names include Princewilliam, Princemichael, Sircharles, and Marcjacob.

  • Moo

We have to believe that somewhere, beyond the bounds of Googleable English, Moo is a valid name and that five parents last year did not decide to name their daughters after the sound a cow makes. But, we want to believe in Santa Claus and instant weight loss too....

  • Notorious

If it was good enough for Biggie... Along with children named Marvelous, Brilliant, Famous, Beautiful, and Cyncere, there were five bad boys named Notorious. Destined to tangle with the five named Tupac.

  • Penisimani

Could you pronounce that for us? While Penisimani seems to be an established if rare name in the South Sea Islands, the six boys who received it in the U.S. are sure to encounter problems with pronunciation and, oh, everything. As are the children named Asser, Peniel, Dearria and Virginia.

  • Swayze

Big "Dirty Dancing" fan? You can be sure the five boys who received this name last year, along with their parents, will be fielding that question for a lifetime. Swayze is one of the newest of the modern hero names on the rise, which include such popular choices as Jeter and Palin.

  • Tank

These times demand toughness, and the boys named Tank, Trek, and Courage come pre-armed for the battle. Other badass baby names include Breaker and Ryker, especially hot in Utah where they presumably have never heard of the prison.

  • Tequila

Brandi is so yesterday. Today's most intoxicating alcohol name is Tequila. Newborn girls were also named Chardonnay, Henessy, and Syrah, while a handful of boys were named Abeer.

  • Tomorrow

Day names, from Friday to Christmas to August, are traditional in many cultures, but today's parents are expanding the lexicon. On the 2011 list were girls named Tomorrow, Evening, and Future.

  • Wrigley

No, not like the snake, like the baseball field. Fourteen girls and 25 boys were named after the classic Chicago stadium. There were also about 150 children of each sex named Shea along with five boys named Fenway. None, however, named Yankee.

Five scientific?tips for a tasty Memorial Day

Pools open and dusty grills come out of hiding this Memorial Day weekend, as we remember fallen war heroes and honor the living. To ensure your Memorial Day cookouts sizzle, rather than fall flat with dry burgers and pouty pals, here are some tips served up with a healthy side of science.

Also, if you're feeling extra saucy this weekend, you may want to try out a bison cheeseburger, the creation of Dave Joachim, a food writer and author of "Mastering the Grill: The Owner's Manuel for Outdoor Cooking" (Chronicle Books, 2007) and "Fire It Up. 400 Recipes for Grilling Everything" (Chronicle Books, 2011).

1. Know your outdoor cooking method
Although the word barbecue is sometimes used to describe any act of outdoor food preparation, the word actually refers to meat slow-cooked over charcoal or wood. The Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, held annually in Memphis, Tenn., defines barbecue even more strictly, as "pork meat (fresh or frozen and uncured) prepared only on a wood and/or charcoal fire."

Because authentic barbecue is cooked at low temperatures, it rarely blackens, though soot from the wood fire may turn it dark brown.

For a crispy-charred crust on your chicken breasts or steak, try cooking on a grill over high heat. The black stuff is made by a simple combustion reaction; the heat causes the amino acids (which make up the meat's proteins) react with sugars inside the meat, leaving behind blackened, partially combusted carbon.

A little bit of charred carbon can lend a smoky flavor to meat, but a lot can be dangerous. A study presented at the 2006 American Association for Cancer Research meeting found that the chemicals in charred meat raised the risk of prostate cancer in rats, and a 2009 study presented at the American Association for Cancer Research meeting found that pancreatic cancer in humans is linked to consumption of well-done meat. [ 7 Foods Your Heart Will Hate ]

2. Grill a healthier patty
Eating red meat can come with some guilt, as the juicy goodness has been linked to all kinds of health hazards, from cancer to cardiovascular disease. But if you're hankering after a juicy burger, guilt-free, try an herbal topping.

    1. Time for America to say ta-ta to Tut

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Two exhibits focusing on the best-known figures from ancient Egypt, King Tut and Cleopatra, are in the last stages of their U.S. tours ? and their departure could signal the end of an era.

    2. 40,000 years ago: Live, from the cave, flutists!
    3. Does quake reveal when Jesus died?
    4. Auctioned dinosaur skeleton smuggled?

Studies show that herbs in the Lamiaceae family ? such as rosemary, sage, and oregano ? may keep meat from causing cancer. As part of an ongoing Food Safety Consortium project at Kansas State University, researchers found that burgers marinated with rosemary had 70 to 80 percent less heterocyclic amines (HCAs) than those soaked in a plain marinade. (HCAs can mutate DNA and are suspected carcinogens.)

When you throw a raw steak or patty on a hot grill, the meat's amino acids and sugars produce unstable compounds called free radicals. These radicals then react with beef's creatine to make HCAs, Kansas State researcher J. Scott Smith, a professor of food chemistry, explained to LiveScience in a past article on healthy burgers.

Herbal antioxidants halt this process, chemically soothing the free radicals before they start creating mutagens all over your basic backyard burger or a beautiful porterhouse steak. While marinades are best because they cover the whole surface, simply shaking on dried herbs may reap the same health benefits.

3. Choose a gas, charcoal or wood grill
This decision can be an important one, as the grills burn at different temperatures with different amounts of moisture. Charcoal and wood burn hotter, and drier, than gas.

That's because propane contains moisture, Joachim said. For every hour of grilling on gas, you release a half-cup to a cup of water vapor into your grill. That keeps the temperature down and prevents the formation of a seared, browned crust on your meat. [ Top 10 Gas Grills of 2012 ]

Some gas grills now come with a sear burner, or a ceramic block that holds heat better than the grill grates. Because the burner can build up more heat, home grillers can use it to brown the outside of a steak or pork chop to get that dark crust, he added.

Speaking of sear, why is it so yummy? The secret is the Maillard reaction, named after Louis-Camille Maillard, who was the first to study this chemistry in the late 1900s. When you apply heat to your burger or other meat, the amino acids hidden inside react with sugars to create hundreds of flavor compounds. Maillard reactions make pretty much everything taste amazing, including roasted coffee, grilled vegetables and even your morning toast.

4. The secret to the juiciest burgers
"The trick with ground meat is once you grind up meat, you're grinding up the muscle fibers, and these are what hold the moisture in," Joachim told LiveScience. "What I recommend doing is adding moisture back in."

That added moisture can take many different forms: Try apple butter in turkey burgers and steak sauce in hamburgers. And if you're exhausted from Memorial Day preparation, you can just mix ice water into the ground meat, along with whatever seasonings you're adding. Not only does the ice water add moisture, it also keeps the center of the burger cool so it doesn't overcook.

The other key component of the perfect burger ? turn off the nutritionist in you ? is fat. Joachim recommends ground beef with 80 percent protein and 20 percent fat. Rather than making a burger juicier, the extra fat stimulates saliva production, moistening your mouth.

5. Grab the veggies
To entertain even the pickiest of vegetarians, the grill may be your best bet.

The trick to grilling vegetables is remembering that they're edible raw, Joachim said, so you don't need to leave them on the grill until they scream for mercy. Just oil them, sear them over medium-high heat and enjoy. For firmer veggies like corn, you'll need a little more time. For corn, simple is best: Throw the ears, husks and all, on the grill over medium-high heat and let them cook for 15 or so minutes, turning occasionally, until the husks are blackened. Inside, the corn will be perfectly done. [ 10 New Ways to Eat Well ]

If you're cooking up veggie burgers, try to dress them up with masculinity ? by searing in those manly grill marks or covering it with the usual burger toppings ? as a recent study found guys may snub such vegetarian alternatives due to their "girly" image.

Am I Bipolar?Asking help from China ? | Health and Fitness

Question by Kevin: Am I Bipolar?Asking help from China ?
Due to the backward medical care and doctors of impatience in my country, I have to turn to you, and hope you could give me some opinions and consultation.

1 family heredity

?1?My mother has had manic bipolar disorder with psychotic symptoms (auditory & visual hallucination) since 1991. Now, her manic and psychotic symptoms have subsided with Lithium 500 mg, valproic acid 400 mg?and
risperidone 2 mg everyday. Currently, she is sleeping too much, and her mental ability, memory, and agility decline dramatically, unable to work, read and understand newspaper, making simple mistakes all the time. It seems that my mother is permanently ?disabled? and there is no hope for her to recover.

My mother?s younger sister has excitable and changeable mood, easy to make a angry fuss over dialy simple stuff. But she manages to work perfectly well.

(2) My father is easy to get angry and anxious as he is aging (I don?t think there is anything wrong with him; his bad temper has a lot to do with family frustrations). And my father?s mother got anxiety disorder (I am not so sure) during cu-l-tu-ral re-vo-lu-ti-on. Now she keeps worrying about my health and future.

2 My History

At the age 11, I suddenly felt the whole world was collapsing??that was typical depression (morning severe but at night felt better). With no medical intervention, it lasted 6 months and almost completely subsided, only I myself turned to be an introverted person with some sense of inferiority.

At the age 15, I felt the same again. Again, it lasted 8 months and gradually subsided, with residual minor symptoms like anxiety, and mild depression. Therefore, I sought psychiatristic help. That psychiatrist prescribed me fluoxetine. Taking it for 2 weeks, 20 mg/day, I felt very typical mild maniac symptoms (fast thinking, unusual excitement, need for less sleep, etc).

Then another psychiatrist diagnosed me as ultra rapid-cycling bipolar disorder (predominantly depression), and gave me low dosage of Lithium+carbamazepine+various antidepressants. And I took that combination for 2 years, but felt nothing at all , even no side effects. During that time, I felt as mild depressive as before, plus anxiety and very disturbing obsessive-compulsive thinking. With no effects at all, I decided to stop all medications.

Years went by, in 2005, I felt my memory declined and I couldn?t focus for a long time, and the feeling of loneliness almost killed me. So I sought local psychiatristic help again. This time, I was prescribed with arbamazepine alone with no antidepressant, (800mg /day). Quite paradoxically and unexpectedly, I felt more agitation, anxiety, and anger than ever before. I could quarrel with my dear parents and threw precious items into pieces. Almost all the anti-maniac mood stabilizers (lithium, carbamazepine, valproic acid) seem to make me feel more ?emotionally turbulent?

Now I am taking Lamotrigine (50MG/DAY), a mood stabilizer supposedly to work for the depressive symptoms. But I am feeling mental dullness, restlessness, and agitation. With addictive tranquilizes (like clonazepam), I could feel much better. I am trying to explain everything to local doctors, but they dismiss me as ?somebody beyond redemption?? scolding me with impatience.

Other symptoms I am experiencing:loneliness, fatigue, lack of interest, erectile difficulty, premature ejaculation, and decreased orgasm.

3 I have some suspicions and questions:

(1) Is it a wrong diagnosis? Is it borderline personality disorder? But I clearly experienced mild maniac symptoms at the early stage. Every summer from 1998?2002, I got elevated mood mixed with mild depression. I even s-to-le things from stores and got a-rres-ted. But in the winter and fall, all goes down

(2) Why do anti-maniac mood-stablizing agents worsen my symptoms?
Taking any of them (lithium, carbamazepine, valproic acid), initially I was fuming with anger, agitation, and irritability. If those were the side effects, how long would them subside????

(3) Will a restart of a medication after short-term discontinuation worsen everything? Due to the discomfort felt, I had to discontinue mood-stablizing agents, and due to the unstable mood, I had to resume the old meds.

(4) How would I feel if taking mood-stablizing agents when I am unipolar depression or completely mentally normal??

Thank you very much for reading my long ?complaints?, and I?ve lost hope for life now. Since no doctor in my country could offer any help any more, I count on you really! I am in such a dilemma, and I am eager to hear any of your suggestions! I have to overcome the current ordeal, and find a job to make a living and support my family! Thank you again for your kindly help and advice!

Best answer:

Answer by lil bit
It sounds like you have the same symptoms as me ? depression, obsessive-compulsive thinking, racing thoughts, anxiety.

It sounds like you have Bipolar ? but more depressive; along with anxiety and OCD (obsessive/compulsive)

I have found that I need to ?fight? for my life sometimes with doctors. The best medication that has helped me is ? Abilify (an antidepressant that helps bipolar). I also take Luvox (OCD), Wellbuterin (depression) and Klonopin (anxiety).

Each person reacts differently to the chemicals we put into our bodies which could explain why you have certain side effects.

My doctor doesn?t worry about diagnosis ? but treats my SYMPTOMS. Sounds like you need similar treatment

I am not certain how your body will react to different medications. For me, it has been 19 years of trial ? until finding the best combination (listed above) but I am open to changes as recommended by the doctor. Again, Abilify has helped me the most; and Klonopin helps well with anxiety, but it kind of makes my thinking sluggish

Feast Yer Eyes! #BraveCarsLandEvent | Musings from Me on Kids ...

One of our favorite family pastimes is movies. Watching ?em at home. Road tripping to a movie. Even getting an invite to one of those oh-so-fun-I-saw-it-first screenings. Heck, I?d even watch a movie on our rickety car DVD with the family. With a busy mom and dad, and three kids in a myriad of activities, well I?ve said it before?family time is precious to us. Doesn?t matter if we are able to sit down to dinner for 20 minutes. And some nights 20 minutes is the only time we are all in the same location. Or if we are only a family of 4 instead of a family of 5. Family time is golden.

One movie has my teen in stitches. My teen is not one to get overly excited about much. She has her likes and her dislikes. And if she dislikes something she?ll let you know LOUD and CLEAR. A movie trailer has become something that is clearly in her Likes column. Brave, the new flick from Disney and Pixar makes her chuckle and literally laugh out loud.

In fact, all of us are itching to see Brave. How could I resist a film set in my native land? Now Brave is actually set in Scotland?but the geographers among you will know that England is ever so close and by close I mean attached to Scotland. So, I?m claiming Scotland as my pseudo homeland!

Brave is about a little girl who is not about to let people tell her what to do. I have three kids ? two girls and one boy ? who embody this sentiment every day. One of our all time favorite movies is Mulan and Brave reminds me very much of what we loved about Mulan. Mulan featured a young Chinese girl who fought to bring honor to her family and China. From what I can see, Brave is the type of movie that every little girl should see. No fairy princesses in this movie! Not that I don?t love princesses, because I do. But I love a movie where girls are the lead character.

Here?s a short clip to whet your appetite for Brave?and it?s funny, too!

Want to find out more about Brave?

I was not compensated to write this post. What can I say? I love all things Disney! The views expressed in this post are my own. I follow the tenets of Blog With Integrity.
